A BAR (also called a pub, tavern, saloon, or taproom) is an establishment that serves drinks, especially alcoholic beverages such as beer, liquor, and cocktails, for consumption on the premises.
Bars provide stools or chairs for their patrons along tables or raised counters. Some bars have entertainment on a stage, such as a live band, comedians, go-go dancers, a floor show or strippers (see strip club). Bars that are part of hotels are sometimes called long bars or hotel lounges.
There have been many names throughout history for establishments where people gather to drink alcoholic beverages. Even when an establishment uses a different mane such as a tavern, the area of the establishment where the bartender serves the alcoholic beverage is normally called "the bar".
There are many types of bars, which can be categorized according to the types of entertainment provided at the bar and by their clientèle.
A COCKTAIL LOUNGE is an upscale bar that is typically located within a hotel, restaurant, or airport.
WINE BARS put a new spin on wine tasting. They seek to remove the association of wine with upscale clientèle and overwhelming wine lists and replace it with a more casual and relaxing atmosphere. Many of these bars are furnished with nooks and booths encased in rich colors and plush surroundings in hopes their guests will linger. Wine bars look to embrace the intellectual stimulation linked to wine and offer an alternative to the bar scene. The laid-back environment lends itself to a good socializing setting with a less crowded feel and more intimate appeal.
A CAFÉ is an informal restaurant offering a range of hot meals and made-to-order sandwiches. Depending on the jurisdiction, a café may be licensed to serve alcohol. The term can also refer to bistro or a restaurant facility within a hotel.
A Public House, informally known as a PUB, is a drinking establishment which is part of British, Irish, Australian, and New Zealand culture. There are approximately 53,500 public houses in the United Kingdom. This number has been declining every year, so that nearly half of the smaller villages no longer have a local pub. In many places, especially in villages, a pub can be the focal point of the community.
A TAVERN is a place of business where people gather to drink alcoholic beverages and be served food, and in some cases, where travelers receive lodging.
A tea house or TEA ROOM is a venue centered on drinking tea. Its function varies widely depending on the culture, and some cultures have a variety of distinct tea-centered houses or parlors that all qualify under the English language term "tea house" or "tea room."

- CAFÉ DE LA RÉGENCE - was an important European centre of chess in the 18th and 19th centuries. All important chess masters of the time played there. It was opened as the Café de la Place du Palais-Royal near the Palais-Royal, Paris in 1681. By the 18th century it was known as the Café de la Régence ("Regency Café"). In 1852 the café moved temporarily to hôtel Dodun, 21 Rue de Richelieu. In 1854 the Café de la Régence moved to 161 Rue Saint-Honoré and remained there until it became a restaurant in 1910. The chess players moved to the café de l'Univers in 1916 and the Office national marocain du tourisme (National Moroccan Tourist Office) took over the site in 1918.

 - Dingo Bar - 10, rue Delambre in the Montparnasse Quarter. Opened its doors in 1923. Most commonly referred to as the Dingo Bar, it was one of the few drinking establishments at the time that was open all night. It became the favorite haunt of the many English-speaking artists and writers who gathered in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s. As recorded by Ernest Hemingway in his book A Moveable Feast, he first met F. Scott Fitzgerald at the Dingo Bar in late April 1925, two weeks after the publication of Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Others who frequented the Dingo Bar included Pablo Picasso, Aleister Crowley, Nancy Cunard and Isadora Duncan would come over from her apartment across the street. The premises that was home to the Dingo Bar remains but today is occupied by L'Auberge de Venise, an Italian restaurant.

Over the years, Harry's New York Bar was frequented by a number of famous American expatriates and international celebrities such as Prince Serge Obolensky, Knute Rockne, Sinclair Lewis, Ernest Hemingway, Jeremy Shaffer, Efe Gures, Bill Tilden, Coco Chanel, Jack Dempsey, Primo Carnera, Ramon Novarro, Aly Khan, Rita Hayworth, Humphrey Bogart, Brendan Behan (who worked there circa 1948-49 according to his memoirs Confessions of an Irish Rebel), and even, occasionally, the Duke of Windsor.

Was where the intelligentsia hung out in the early 20th century: A bust-up between André Breton and Tristan Tzara marked the end of the Dada movement here in 1922; then the Surrealist crowd moved in, along with literary expats like Henry Miller, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, who said that the Closerie was 'one of the best cafés in Paris'. A bronze plaque engraved with Hemingway’s name (in the piano bar) commemorates the author’s patronage. The literary flame is kept burning too, thanks to the Prix de la Closerie des Lilas - an award for 21st-century, French-language, female authors.
